Where is my night? Part 1

As the technology owerwhelmed me in the last two weeks the begin of my Iceland residency will be in text form. My new camera and my old computer are not compatible. It is a little bit like being in the desert but I take it as a chance to get to the essential. This is my the fourth day in Reykjavik, Iceland. A day here in summer is a day and a night. Let me explain: it's not getting dark anymore, yesterday we could see the sun going down into the sea in front of our living room and rise up again a few minutes later . So when I go to bed at any time, there is light. I feel kind of superawake all the time even if I am not. The body tells you it is time to sleep but the eyes cannot believe it, like when you was a child and was told to go to bed early. Now it feels to early at any time of the "day-night". It is something I have always dreamt about that the day and its time should be extendable.

It might be a coincidence or not that tonight two links which at first sight have nothing in common are published on my facebook page: "Time to pretend" a song by MGMT and a link from Liberation (french newspaper) and Spiegel (german magazine) about facebook and its new users conditions.

We live in a time in which we can get all kind of information about everything from everywhere. And by the way we also get information we don't need, information we weren't supposed to get if there wouldn't be internet and its reams of possibilities. On the network level this has radically changed our life, we can be connected with everybody at anytime. And we are also connected with people we wouldn't be if there wasn't internet and pages like facebook. On one hand there is the chance to leave behind any kind of shyness or fear or dullness and on the other there is the risk to disperse oneself. And we are in contact with people we havn't been since highschool or university but if we or they are in town we wouldn't call- because there is just nothing to say.

Here we slowly come to pretension: pretension to be in touch, in contact, in buisness. We are connected mentally with people but not physically. We prefer to spend lots of time in front of the screens and scrolling for hours than to have a walk outside and meet the person, or just go to sleep and recover from a hard day. No, we just can't stop. (I include myself and for information I actually love my hair which is growing and I will not cut it for the next 3 weeks). Of course it's nice to know that XY is well and playing with his wife, son or dog or is in holidays or is in his super car or is lying in the tube, but do we really care about this? Is that what makes us going forward, giving us inspiration for our life and our happyness? Sure enough there is the very favorable effact that information is in a way selected by our friends and contacts and this gives us new directions to go and see.

There must be another thing which keeps us going on and on with facebook: the possibility to pretend to be someone, to leave a trace in this tangled mass of information. We finally are happy to inform our friends, former friends and has been friends about what we do, like, read, see and we are finally happy to show that we are important. We need attention and here we get it and we ask for more, more, more. The interesting thing for me in the coincidence or not in the song of MGMT is that they sing "'ll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone" - like teenies who do not want to grow up. We are trying to get the attention back we once got from our families but we don't really want to make the step to relay this attention to our possible children, or other choices of life. There is the deep wish to be related but why don't we just digg up worms, listen to the water or watch a tree? We are not related- with ourselves...and we still miss the time spend alone.

The idea for the exhibition at La Générale en Manufacture started from a sentence in Johnny Cashs' song 'Solitary Man': love is a part time thing love is a paper ring. I loved this poetic object 'paperring' and decided to make it. Than I realized that a lot of my work is about cycles, circles, repetition and center. This opens to me now new perspectives of my work and offers me new 'cycles' to continue.

My friend I. gave me the opportunity to make a dinner for my Berlinfriends at her house. Together we prepared the menue which was: Mousse d'haricots blanc avec un brin de menthe, soupe à l'oignion à la parisienne, salade verte de printemps et prunneaux au vin pimenté avec une étoile d'anis. N. brought a good cold bananacream dessert, thank you. It was a succes and we enjoyed the good time together. I made a list with all the guests because there were a lot of different people I knew from different times. I like to make lists and I wanted to give my guests something they could bring home...but I forgot to offer everyone an oigion because I bought 3kg of them and I. can't eat the 2 kg I left in Berlin.

M.K. is the youngest son of my fathers’ bestfriend. He’s videoartsit and musician.

C.H. is my oldest friend from Kehl, we did Kinderfreizeiten (summerholidays for kids) together. He is creatif director and invents games.

S.W., was a friend of my sister in childhood. I found her on the internet at Xing. She is working in the film industry.

B.M. (and his girlfriend Z.) is an old friend of my sister, we were living in the same city in Kehl. He is artist. We normaly met every Christmas and by chance oftener.

J.S. (and his girlfriend A.) is my oldest friend from university in Essen. He’s photographer and artist.

K.B. is a friend from university she is photographer and artist When I knew her she was very into yoga.

R.C. is my friend from university. He showed me the wonderful Asturias and Galicia in Spain. He’s graficdesigner.

My friend I.S. was studing in Essen too but I met her later when she was already in Amsterdam. She is fashion photographer and artist and wants to go to New York.

C.P. is a real Berliner. I met him in Paris at a friends house which whom he works a lot. He is industrial designer and artist.

M.D. and C.S. are photographers and artists, they study in Leipzig. I met them in Essen on a party in Essen where I went with my oldest friend L.L.

M.K. is journalist. She has an internetblog called fnart and writes about fashion and art. I read one of her textes about my friend C.J and I contacted her, because I found it was so well written. This is the first time I really see her.

S.U. (and her friend) is videoartist, I met her in october 2007 at the gallery Helga Klosterfelde, where we were talking a long time about Rikrit Tiravanija.

A.M. is artist. I met her at the Générale in Sèvres /Paris where my friend L.S. had an exhibition in november 2007. She lives in Berlin and travels a lot.

L.A. is artist and photographer. I will exhibit in his studio at La Générale in Sèvres /Paris in may. We didn’t had much time to see us. He lives in Paris and Berlin.

D.G. is I's roommate, I met him last week in this apartment. He is illustrator living in Berlin since 7 months.

O. is a friend of I.He has ten original black and white photography automats in Berlin and all over the world. I will see him for the first time tonight.

N. is I's friend is a famous Berlin Djane in coffees and clubs. I will see her for the first time tonight.

Spring Berlin

Last week I went to Berlin for to see the Berlin Biennale and for to visit my Berlinfriends. As a french-german person I'm always torn between the two countries. The medicine againt this is to be where you are in that moment and not to think about differencies, just enjoy the present. This is what I did and I had a very great time.

Here is in my opinion a good beginnig for Spring!

Less and less you see places like these in the center of Berlin.

This was sprayed on different walls in Kreuzberg. It seems that something happend that day, I wonder what...but it doesn't seems a good thing.

The installation from Katerina Sedá in Skulpturenpark, where I met by coincidence O.H a collegue from university . Berlin is a village for creatives!

Also on the terrain of the Skulpturenpark, but is was me who made it an artpiece...

Factory for Mental Space Development

I created the "Factory for Mental Space Development" last december in a book to collect my ideas, but also to keep on working my creativity even without an atelier. In this way the space I havn't in real is fixed on paper and at the same time in my mind. The spaces created in that book reflect all kind of mental states.

...to my old vocation: work as a photographer. Since a few weeks on sundays I'm going to the Puces de St Ouen / the famous fleemarket in the north of Paris. The sun is often shining these days this makes it very agréable! For me it is very relaxing to amble around, look at all these things which are arranged like in a theatre. It is very interesting how the atmosphere changes the nearer you get there. St Ouen is a suburb town of Paris directly behind the Peripherique and rough and old architecture is completly mixed there. I love this Brooklyn flair there, that changes the deeper you get into the fleemarket into international and jetset-flair. You hear english, italien, german, russian, everything there. I like how the antiquaries are fading to the decor of their little boutiques.

The context is my postexhibtionhumor after my exhibition in Berlin and coming than to Paris in the middle of august where there was almost no one. This morning after visiting the Artnews projects, where the gallerists Julia Schleicher and Andreas Lange curated "Dark Matter" and Helga Maria Klosterfelde who is showing Rikrit Tiravanija, I found several of my invitation cards lying in the street. It was in front of the KW /Kunstwerke. At first it seemed very strange to see my name there. While I took these pictures a man asked me what I'm photographing and I explained him that this was my name and my invitation card. He thought that I was I'm from the police (because of my yellow raincoat) and that I would distribute parking tickets. But than he asked me if I'd had a card for him and he said he would come and visit my exhibtion.

Maybe I should make a game out of it like "Schnitzeljagd" / a snipped hunt, a game children play. I like the idea of friends of mine walking along that area and finding my name lying on the street "Ah she's here!"

Yesterday was the vernissage, a lot of my in Berlin living friends (happy to see you all!) and lots of people I didn't knew came to see me and the exhibition got a good feedback. Thank very much you I., M., N., Sandro from Total Artspace, without your help this exhibition wouldn't have taken place there, and thank you U.for the inspiration for this projekt! The next days I will slow down a little and spend some time hanging around with friends, see some exhibtions in the center before the big Documenta 12 in Kassel.

Yesterday I continued to sew the sail, I. came over and took these nice pictures while I'm working on it. There is also a picture from me in the tent, where I haven't been sitting since more than a year. To read what is written inside takes less than 5 minutes, but to stich it took me several weeks.

Today was my first day working in the gallery. I began to sew the sail wich I will attach at the ceiling. My vacation in Quiberon, Bretagne where I was learning sailing catamaran (it was very exiting!) is still fresh in my memory and gives me a good complement to this artpiece. The sail will be fabricated out of plasticbags which I collected when I was going to the market twice a week during the last months.

Yesterday was the Petit Dîner Exotique with a hotspicy Bananasoup and a smooth Mango Cockail. We all liked the soup that we think about to make it again for the vernissage (the cocktail too).

Tomorrow will be the opening of my work in progress exhibition here in Berlin. We'll have an exotic dinner and cocktails to start the voyage in the Carribean with the tent only and the text which Lena wrote about my work. I wanted to have it simple and clear for the beginning and let the exhibition grow up bit by bit. I'm curious how it will be and who will come, hope to see you there!

Welcome to my World goes Welcome to the Caribbean / deutsch

Ein Zelt und ein Boot: dies ist das Aufeinandertreffen zweier Arbeiten von Andrea Weber. Es handelt sich um eine frühere sowie um eine „Work in Progress“ Arbeit, welche die Künstlerin im Laufe der Ausstellung in der Galerie Total Artspace, Berlin fertigstellen wird. Als „Artist in Residence“ wird sie auf Materialsuche in Galerienähe gehen.

Welcome to my world entstand 2006 und besteht aus einem Zelt, das sich wie ein Kleidungsstück trägt; ein Panzer, der sowohl beschützt als auch Hinweise auf seine Trägerin preisgibt. Im Inneren sind die Erinnerungen und die intimen Gedanken der Künstlerin eingeschlossen, die sie in die Zeltwand gestickt hat.

Das Boot wird hingegen aus unpersönlichen Materialien hergestellt werden, es handelt sich um industriell gefertigte Materialien, die hier eine poetische Bestimmung finden, um eine Reise in die Ferne zu suggerieren. Denn an Bord dieser provisorischen Behausungen läßt sich eine vergängliche Landschaft entdecken, die die Künstlerin anhand von Aufzeichnungen, die sie in dem Bordtagebuch eines befreundeten Wissenschaftlers gefunden hat. Als dieser vor einigen Monaten an das andere Ende der Welt gereist ist, um die Besonderheiten des Klimas, der Flora und Fauna zu erforschen, teilte er auf seinem Blog seine Erfahrungen und Bilder mittels einer Internetseite mit.

Welcome to my World goes Welcome to the Caribbean ist daher die Umkehrung einer Situation, in der die Abwesenheit eine Welt entstehen läßt. Die Künstlerin hat sich die Beschreibungen eines ihr unbekannten Landes angeeignet und lädt dazu ein, eine Welt zu entdecken, die sie sich vorgestellt hat. In den Räumen der Galerie wird die Vegetation durch zahlreiche Zeichnungen und Aquarelle erschaffen, die sie in ihrem Atelier realisiert hat, in dem sie sich die Tropen ausgemalt hat. In diesem häuslichen Dschungel warten die Zeichnungen nur auf einen Windhauch, um lebendig zu werden. Für die Künstlerin geht es eher um eine „Ökologie als Geisteswissenschaft“ und darum, ihre eigene emotionale Welt zu erkunden, als um einen Landschaftsraum.

Une tente et un bateau, soit la rencontre entre une pièce antérieure d’Andrea Weber, et celle qu’elle concevra au cours de son exposition – résidence au Total Art Space, à partir de matériaux récupérés aux alentours de la galerie.

Welcome to my World réalisée en 2006, est une tente qui se porte comme un vêtement, comme une carapace qui protège tout autant qu’elle renseigne. Elle renferme à l’intérieur, les souvenirs et les pensées intimes de l’artiste qu’elle a tissé dans la toile.

Le bateau, en revanche, sera fabriqué à partir d’éléments impersonnels, des objets industriels qui trouveront ici une destinée poétique pour évoquer un lointain voyage. Car à bord de ces embarcations précaires, on découvre le paysage évanescent inventé par l’artiste à partir des notes descriptives qu’elle a trouvé dans le carnet de bord d’un ami scientifique. Parti il y a quelques mois à l’autre bout de la terre pour étudier les spécificités du climat, de la faune et de la flore, il partage sur son blog ses expériences et quelques photos avec les détenteurs de l’adresse http.

Welcome to my goes Welcome to the Caribbean est ainsi le retournement d’une situation où l’absence fait naître un monde. L’artiste s’est approprié les descriptions d’une terre inconnue et invite tout un chacun à découvrir physiquement un univers qu’elle s’est figurée mentalement. Dans l’espace de la galerie, la végétation sera constituée par les nombreux dessins et aquarelles qu’elle a réalisé dans son atelier en imaginant les tropiques. Dans cette jungle domestique, les dessins n’attendent qu’un souffle de vent pour s’animer. Plus qu’un paysage, il s’agit pour l’artiste de définir l’écologie comme une science humaine et d’explorer son propre univers émotionnel.

The work “Welcome to my World” is a tent, which is wearable as a piece of clothing.

Starting from the fact, that every human has its protective cover, which is formed by his past, his taste, his dreams and nightmares I have visualized it with this tent. The cover is an image of oneself which is put over outside and this image is reflected in the menality, the style of clothes and the musictaste. The invisible cover marks the relation and the separation between oneself and the other. During several months I sat in this tent and stiched words, phrases and little objects which have a personal meaning to me inside of it. My idea is to come to Berlin with the tent and to install it in the Total Artspace Gallery and to live there during the exhibtion. The fact that I have very little space here in Paris limits me to work on two dimensions and the idea to work and create in the gallery inspires me a lot.

The idea behind is the following:

As in january a friend of mine went to the Caribbean to do scientific research concerning the climate change, which manifests itself strong storms. He created a blog on which he wrote about his experience on the research ship. Since then I haunt the adventure of science and the life on a sailing-ship. This inspired me to do my own trip to the Caribbean, through my artistic work and to develop a thought about this place and the nature of this region.

I will sew a sail out of plasticbags, show a serie of treasure maps, underwaterjungle drawings in an installation and a serie of little mysterious objects. I understand this work as a work in progress and the exhibition starts on the 19th of july 2007 with the arriving at the gallery with the tent and the underwaterjungle drawings. There will be a an exotic dinner for friends of the gallery and the artist, this date will be communicated then. The vernissage will be on 26. July 2007 at the Total Artspace Gallery, Lenaustraße 5 in 12047 Berlin. I would be glad to see you if you are around Berlin at this time.

Thinkings on space

I was taking a rest from working in the evening and took a look
around in my room. Since I'm preparing an exhibtion in Berlin for July
I've got the impression that art is going to eat my space and me .
When I think about the fact, that during my beginning in Paris
I've lived in a 12 sqaure meter room with three windows just in roof,
so this appartment is quite luxurious. But it's necessary to breath
while working hard and so these thinkings about "normal needs"
just came along. In fact we get used to a lot of things in our life,
it's just a question of length. So even if the circumstances are bad
we get used to. If we live drama, we get used to this, if we live
deployment we get used to that and so on. Living in a small place is also an
intellectual efford in repression. While working concentrated on my drawings I forget the lack of space but sitting on the couch it really jumps on me.
